Last year, we showed you an all-electric wakeboard boat that Epic Boats was showing off at the time. Since then, it has evolved into the 232 Sport Electric (SE). Now, Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer has experienced the production-prototype's awesomeness from both behind the wheel and behind the transom – at the end of a rope. Watching the footage, it is impossible for us not to feel more than a twinge of jealousy.
There's nothing like riding at speed across open water. Subtract the engine noise, gas fumes and potential hydrocarbon pollution and the righteousness of the experience is exponentially amplified. To make this dream-like state a reality, the 232SE uses a liquid-cooled, brushless DC motor paired to a dual counter-rotating Mercruiser prop powered by a 60-kWh bank of lithium phosphate Flux Power batteries. The result is 268 horses (200 kW) capable of 664 lb ft (900 Nm) of torque that can bring this beautiful 5,800-lb (2639-kg) ballasted beast up on plane quickly and top out at 40 miles per hour. A charge is said to last for one hour going all-out wakeboard crazy or eight hours cruising at a more sedate eight knots (9.2 mph).
Charging can take six hours on 220 volts, but they offer a Volkswagen TDI diesel/biodiesel generator that puts out 45 kilowatts and can bring charge times down to one hour. Price tag for the well-appointed 23' 2" water craft is a whistle-inspiring $150,000, but buyers can take comfort in a better boating experience and access to bodies of water where gas burners are banned, not to mention lower maintenance and fuel costs.
